This bathroom remodel was the last big remodeling project in our home. It was a tough call whether or not do redo it because it was perfectly functional beforehand. Perfectly functional but also kinda gross and totally uninspiring. Once Kohler got in touch with us about working together on this project, it was a no-brainer — I’ve been obsessed with Kohler’s Inia sink for a minute now, so the sink ended up being the perfect jumping-off-place for the design.
You may remember the big design dilema that we were facing about where to put the entryway for the bathroom and whether or not to increase the square footage (while also eliminating a closet). In the end we decided to keep the bathroom small (it’s the exact same size as it was before) but just reconfigured the space to make it feel larger. Ultimately, we felt that we couldn’t sacrifice the closet space in our small house with very limited storage for a larger bathroom. Alright so let’s take a look at the “before”:
It’s not like it’s HORRIBLE–it’s practical, but it’s very basic and underwhelming. The tiles also kinda make me cringe. You can watch the video to really see how the whole bathroom progressed…but suffice it to say that the AFTER makes a VERY big difference:
Like I mentioned before, Kohler’s Inia sink was our jumping-off place for the whole design. (Also, in the video below, you’ll notice I pronounced the Inia sink wrong…it’s actually “in-I-a” with a long-I.) The color, the recycled glass, the whole idea of focusing on natural materials. We used live-edge wood for the vanity, and instead of encasing the sink in it (hiding the bottom) we simply cut the wood so that the sink sits inside it, so when you’re in the bathtub you can look up through it.
Another big design decision wash the hardware finish. We ended up with the brushed bronze finish which I am absolutely in love with. In certain lights it reads more like gold, and in certain lights it looks more bronze. It gives off the luxurious gold feeling without being too over-the-top. It’s understated but still kinda blingy at the same time. New favorite finish. Our hardware is from the Kohler Purist Collection.
I love this shot so much because it allows you to really see how much style we were able to eek out of such a small space. putting in the large window and moving the tub to the opposite wall so that it could be under the window was probably the best layout decision that we made. It’s hard to tell in this photo but we used frosted glass (which is actually more milky than frosted) for the bottom portion of the window and clear glass at the top portion. You can really see in this photo how in the light the brushed bronze finish on the shower-head and faucet (also from the Purist collection) looks like a really pretty mellow gold colors.
The niches that we had installed really make the space feel extra special. We put them in our last bathroom remodel as well but the niches weren’t really deep enough to hold plants so that was one big change we made. We also used contrasting tile in the back of the niches which I think added a lot of fun visual contrast.

The mirror was a vintage find from Etsy (see bottom of the post for all shopping sources). It was tricky to find the right mirror for this space because a lot of shapes looked strange in the arched niches on either side. The vintage mirror ended up echoing the arched shape without looking too matchy-matchy.
I love looking at the B+A of the fixtures. I mean, can you even?? Not just pretty, either — our new show head, faucets and toilet are all also working to conserve water and limit water usage — a very important thing for my family and our environment — especially since we live in Southern California.
