You know that we’re all about color at The Jungalow, but if a lot of bold color isn’t your vibe, never fear- neutral can be boho too! From rich tans, to pale blush, cozy creams, and bold browns, bringing a neutral palette from boring to boho is as simple as 1) texture, 2) pattern, and 3) tones.
In the living room of Emily Katz & Adam Porterfield (from The New Bohemians), we see our ‘neutral three’ at work:
- Texture- from the driftwood hanging from the ceiling, to the rattan side table, the cotton of the macrame chair, the finish of the ceramics, and the various textiles in their living room, Emily & Adam let textures play together. Whether soft and fluffy or rough and worn, variation in texture gives depth to a room, and makes things feel collected, rather than staged.
- Pattern- starting with the bold pattern of their Kilim rug, moving up to the pattern on the chair cushions and pillows, all the way to the artwork on the wall, pattern keeps your eye moving which adds to the flow of a room. Pattern can also help a simple color palette feel more dynamic as the colors play off each other in different ways, depending on the pattern.
- Tones- while there is a lot of brown in this room, it definitely doesn’t feel monochromatic, or boring, thanks to all of the different tones of brown used. Deep chocolate, burnt sienna, caramel, tan, blonde, even pale greige all work together to create layers of color that again, feel collected and not matchy-match.
