Looks like we’ll get a reprieve from the heat this weekend. And it’s a good thing because we’ve got some great rides and events to tempt you with.
Here’s what we suggest…
Saturday, August 4th
**BP PICK!!** Banana Belt Fat Bike Festival – Gold Beach (Oregon Coast)
Escape the heat and head to the southern Oregon coast for a weekend of fat bikes, beaches, great beer and more. This affordable, family-friendly event is fully supported and a great opportunity to try fat biking and discover a beautiful part of our coastline. More info here.
Luminosa Metric Century – All day at Oak Knoll Winery (Hillsboro)
Enjoy the great roads of the nearby Willamette Valley in this ride that benefits Morrison Child and Family Services. Fully-stocked rest stops and a choice of routes suitable for the whole family. More info here.
Youth MTB Ride – 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Stub Stewart State Park (Buxton)
The NW Trail Alliance has teamed up with the Oregon Interscholastic MTB League for monthly rides for young riders to meet and gain trail-riding confidence. Coaches will lead the ride and it’s recommended that your child has some MTB experience before showing up. More info here.
Welcome to (Bike) Portland – 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Peninsula Park (N)
I’m very excited about this ride because I’m leading it! Join me on a ride geared toward riders new to Portland. It’s part of a new social riding club organized by our partners at Filmed By Bike. The focus of the ride will be about how to squeeze the most fun, efficiency, and happiness from your daily riding. I’ll cover how to use Portland infrastructure to your advantage, share some of my driver/car management tips, clarify key bike laws, and point out some historic advocacy victories and interesting infrastructure tidbits as we roll along. Bring your questions! We’ll stop at the end for bites and drinks. More info here.
Sunday, August 5th
Cyclocross Clinic (Wenzel Coaching) – 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at Gateway Green (NE)
This professionally-taught clinic ($45 per session) will cover all the cyclocross bases and have you ready to have your best season ever. Wenzel’s coaches are top-notch people with experience you can respect and trust. More info here.
Portland Wheelmen Touring Club Annual Picnic Rides – Times vary, rides start and end at Columbia Park (N)
Everyone is invited on pre-picnic rides led by PWTC members. The annual picnic promises a wonderful potluck and a presentation by author Dan Devise who wrote a book about Greg LeMond’s magical comeback in the 1989 Tour de France. Note that the picnic event requires registration and PWTC membership. More info here.
Light Up Ride II: Hawaiian Shirt Edition – 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm at We Are PDX (NW)
Local creative agency is hosting this “casual, but lively nighttime ride around the waterfront loop.” Expect mobile sound systems and a few surprise stops along the way. Grab a Biketown or scooter if you don’t have a bike! More info here.
