This Just In: Sarah & Ruby Design Studio’s Hand Painted Wallpaper

We have such a soft spot for hand made home goods here at Jungalow. Anything that is made with love and care carries those qualities with it into the space it eventually lives in. That’s why when we heard about Sarah & Ruby Design Studio’s hand painted wallpaper sheets, we needed to know more! Sarah Schwartz and Ruby Geisler are the dynamic duo and creators behind this wallpaper. Sarah’s background is in engineering and law (say what?!) but she has always had a passion for figuring out how things are made – especially decorative arts. Ruby has a degree in fine art specializing in woodblock print making and lithography. She has experience in throwing pottery, painting, drawing and sculpting. She decided to try her hand at putting her art on textiles, which led her to the signature organic and bold style embodied by Sara & Ruby Design Studio’s products. Sarah and Ruby are mindful makers who interpret artisan traditions into modern designs in their California textile and wallpaper studio.

Sarah and Ruby were inspired by the domino papers of the 18th century and wanted to make a collection of handcrafted single sheets of wallpaper with bold patterns and dimensional qualities with a sense of movement. Each 22″ x 30″ sheet is hand painted with an artisanal paste paper technique using non-toxic methyl-cellulose paste tinted with acrylic paint. The paste formula is manipulated on 100% cotton mould-made artist paper with everyday objects like credit cards and combs. The deckled edges are probably our favorite feature of this wall paper. They are meant to overlap and show the artistic nuances of every piece.

Sarah and Ruby stick to the small batch, made-to-order production model to minimize waste and encourage mindful consumption. Their wallpaper comes in three patterns and three color ways. We think mixing different colors in the same pattern would look gorgeous!
