As obsessed as we are with textiles, wallhangings and anything with pompoms around here, when we came across this vintage Christmas tree wall weaving on @house_of_sunshine’s instagram we knew we had to try our hand at a DIY version of our very own. With a couple of hours and some simple materials (that you may already have lying around your house) you can craft up with retro-tastic Christmas tree alternative that is perfect for small spaces and unexpected locations (front door? kitchen? hallway?). Add some battery operated LED lights and a god’s eye at the top and what you got is a jungalicious, boho wall weaving that will spread the smiles year after year.
Materials:
- Yarn
- Wood Dowels
- 1/4″ Diameter
- One at 3 3/4″ long
- Two at 6″ long
- One at 6 1/4″ long
- Two at 8 3/4″ long
- One at 9″ long
- Two at 12″ long
- 1/8″ Diameter
- Two at 6″ long
- 1/4″ Diameter
- Scissors
- X-Acto Knife
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Hot Glue Gun
- Extra Small Pom Pom Maker
- Angel Trinket
- Battery Powered LED Mini Lights
Step-By-Step:
- Take your 1/4″ diameter dowel and ruler and mark in with your pencil at 3 3/4″
- With the X-Acto knife, cut around the whole dowel enough for you to break it apart
- Measure out and cut out two 6″ sections, one 6 1/4″, two 8 3/4″, one 9″ sections, and two 12″ sections
- Tie your light green yarn around the end of your 3 3/4″ section. Hot glue a little dab about 1/4″ from the end so it stays in place
- With one of your 6″ sections and your 3 3/4″, start wrapping around the two sections, leaving a 4″ space in between them
- Keep wrapping around the two seconds till you get to about 1/4″ to the end. Tie off and hot glue a dab to keep it to stay
- To secure them better to the dowel, hot glue a strip of glue all along the top of the yarn, allowing it to touch the dowel. Do it to the bottom dowel as well
- Repeat this step with the 6 1/4″ and the 8 3/4″, then the 9″ and the 12″ sections
- With the dark green yarn cut 6″ long, enough for the top two tiers of green fringe
- With the second 6″ dowel, fold the 6″ yarn and place it under the dowel. Take the tails and put the tails through the loop it creates, making it tight at the end
- Do this to the whole dowel until the end, allowing 1/4″ on both sides
- Repeat the process with the 8 3/4″ section
- With the dark green yarn, cut 8″ and make enough to use for the last tier
- Repeat the same process as before on your 12″ dowel, allowing a 1/4″ gap at the ends
- Cut each fringe layer so that it’s even on the bottom
- With your colorful yarn, tie around sections of your light green yarn, making them even
- Do this to each tier
- Tie together your top light green section with your dark green 6″ fringe dark green dowel using a a piece of dark green yarn
- Tie together your middle light green section with the 8 3/4″ fringe dark green dowel
- Tie together your bottom light green section with the 12″ fringe dark green dowel
- Now tie together the top tier with the middle tier and then the middle tier with the bottom tier
- With the colorful yarn, make pom pom’s in a variety of colors for your tree
- Hot glue them onto your tree
- To make the God’s Eye, first take the 1/8″ diameter dowel and cut the same way as before to get two 6″ long sections
- Cross them in the middle and tie a piece of yarn in the middle to secure them together
- Tie another piece of long yarn to the center and begin to weave it around the sticks (weave diagram)
- To weave you first go over the front, back and then behind, and over the front again of stick #1
- Next over the front, back and behind, and over the front again of stick #2
- Continue over the front, back and behind, and over the front again of stick #3
- Then over the front, back and behind, and over the front again of stick #4
- Go around as many times are you want, until you want to change the color
- Tie on different colors for contrast
- Continue weaving until the yarn reaches near the ends of the stick.
- Finish with tassels at the four corners
- To make the tassels wrap around a long piece of yarn around all four fingers of your hand, going around 12 or so times
- Take another yarn and weave it through your index and middle finger and knot it around the bunch of yarn
- Slip it off your fingers and secure it tight with another knot
- Trim the yarn to make it even, except leave the two long tails from your knot
- With the tails from your knot tie it on to one of the ends of the stick (you can secure it with a dab of hot glue)
- Repeat this process three more times, changing up the colors
- Tie on the God’s Eye to the top of the tree by looping it around the yarn in your God’s Eye and bringing it down to loop around your dowel on the top of your Christmas Tree
- Tie on a little hook loop with a piece of yarn so you easily hang it!
- Add little twinkly lights to make it shine!
- VIOLA! Your very own yarn Christmas Tree!
