Concrete (Coating) Solutions for Garage Floors

In many homes, the saddest looking surface is actually found outside the living area . . . in the garage. And no wonder: Equal parts car shelter, workshop, garden center, and storage space, the garage is routinely subjected to all sorts of abuse, especially the floor.

Even in homes that are otherwise impeccable, it’s not unusual to see on the garage floor a messy mélange of tire tracks, chemical stains, paint drippings, grease spots, potting soil, and more. Shielded from view, the surface is like a scrapbook of projects past – which most people prefer that no one else see.

If you’re one of the countless homeowners who live in fear that you’ll forget to draw down the garage door when friends or family visit, help is on the way — not a brand new garage, but rather, a brand new type of concrete coating. Combining the acrylic used in the most durable high-end paints with chemically resistant epoxy, the coatings are a godsend for garage floor maintenance.

Acrylic-epoxy hybrid (“AEH”) coatings offer a variety of benefits that any homeowner can appreciate. The new coatings are:

· extremely durable
· resistant to chemicals
· abrasion resistant and scrub resistant
· UV resistant
· resistant to yellowing
· great at retaining their gloss
· fade resistant, so they’ll maintain the original color, and
· resistant to tire marks (which is especially important to those who still have the space to pull in their car!)

painting garage floorAEH coatings are also painter-friendly. They are ultra-low in VOCs, so they emit no harsh or harmful odor, either during application, or afterward. Plus, they’re easy to use: remaining fluid and workable for hours, yet drying and hardening quickly after they’re applied, making it possible to put a garage back into use in a flash.

The new concrete coatings were first used in high-traffic commercial settings where the wear and tear is extreme: schools and hospitals, office buildings, stores, public buildings, and even airports. They performed well there, and they’ll do just as well in a residential garage.

Available in a wide range of colors, AEH coatings may already be at your neighborhood paint store or home center; if not, they’ll be there soon. Either way, they offer a concrete solution for almost any garage floor dilemma!
