DIY Fringe Coolie Hat Pendant Lamp

Ya’ll know how I feel about fringe, pompoms and tassels — and I’ve done fringe lamp DIYs in the past (like this one from three years ago), but a few weeks ago I had the idea to incorporate some kind of natural material in a fringe pendant lamp, like rattan or bamboo. My mind immediately went to the Asian conical hat, commonly known as an Asian rice hat, coolie hat (in the UK), or farmer’s hat, to use as a base. When I was a child my family and I spent a month in Indonesia and we brought back one of these hats. We used to use it as a lamp shade, among other things, and so it was an easy leap in my mind to use it as a base for this project.

The pendant lamps were crazy simple to make. See below for instructions and materials.

I found the three hats I wanted to use as a base. Then I bought fringe in different colors and lengths, and lighting kits. I cut small holes in the tips of the hats with a sharp pair of scissors so that the lighting kits could fit through the top. Then I hot-glued the fringe around the base of the hats. Once the glue dried, I hung the hats from the lamp cord and BOOM — that was it. The whole project took me about 30 minutes for all three lamps.
I think these would look amazing in a large cluster over a dining table, and they were so easy and affordable to make that I think it’s also a great idea for an event like a wedding decor.

Materials:

*Make sure that your light bulb doesn’t touch the bamboo and use a low-wattage light bulbs. Be safe and enjoy!
