This just In: Ixchel Triangle

We’ve got some more handmade artisanal treasures for ya courtesy of Ixchel Triangle, a company that works closely with artisans in Guatemala who intricately weave beautiful, bold and colorful textiles that are incorporated into bags and accessories. If you’re like us, you’re probably curious about their name: Ixchel (pronounced “ish-chell”) is the Mayan goddess of the moon, of love, of fertility, and weaving. Ixchel is sometimes depicted in Mayan art as a young woman, as a symbol of the waxing moon, or as an older woman, as a symbol of the waning moon, pouring a jug of water onto the earth. Other times, she is represented as an elderly woman weaving on a loom. Tory Jones, the founder of Ixchel Triangle wanted to honor Ixchel, so she named her business after the goddess and continues to be inspired her legacy.

Tory first fell in love with Guatemalan textiles because of her grandmother, who moved to Guatemala. When Tory thinks back on her childhood, she remembers it being adorned with the bright colors, stories, and beautiful textiles and artisanal products her grandmother would bring back to the United States from Guatemala. Tory was inspired to travel to Guatemala herself and when she did, she says it felt like she was going home: the landscape, people, colors, and culture felt familiar to her because of everything her grandmother shared with her during her childhood.

Tory’s hope is that people who purchase an Ixchel Triangle product will see it as a work of art and a labor of love. Each bag is created by a unique human being, not by a machine. In fact, Ixchel Triangle products are never made in factories – all artisans are part of a co-op and they receive a portion of all the proceeds from the sale of products they make.

We are loving the generational appreciation for handmade textiles passed down from Tory’s grandmother to Tory. Thinking of the time and energy that goes into making each textile reminds us of the beauty of slow, intentional creation of any piece of art – these just happen to be wearable! These colors and patterns are mesmerizing!
