PAD PEEK: Bryony Webster

This time around, we’re venturing all the way to Johannesburg, South Africa, y’all! Join us for a rad tour of Bryony Webster’s bohemian home and take a peek at all of her eclectic, thrifted treasures. Bryony filled us in on just how her 1900s house transformed into the home of her dreams, how her home décor company, Furbelow, first came to be & how she and her husband, Johnny enjoy their rockin’, vibrant oasis! Get lost in her maximal, ever-evolving space and spot her modelesque pups posing among all sorts of bright hues and playful patterns. We are so about her maximal use of color!

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Career-wise, I am a film producer and I have a bohemian interiors online shop called Furbelow. I define myself as an organized creative who actually just wants to live in a fantasy world of color and pretty things. The biggest loves of my life are my wonderful husband, Johnny, my fur children, Beatrix (the Queen Jack Russell) and Dash (naughty as hell, but sweet as pie Beagle), my huge extended family, my home, and Furbelow.

Tell us about your home.
We live in Johannesburg, South Africa, in an artsy suburb called Melville. Our house was built in the early 1900s. It has beautiful old wooden floors and pressed ceilings. It was built onto and has expanded quite a bit through the last 100 years. So, our home basically consists of spaces with lots of volume and light, but there is no structure. Just rooms feeding off other rooms. Our house is not big, but visitors always get lost because the layout makes no sense – which is what I really like about it.

How long have you been in your home?
We bought it a year ago. I really wanted to make it a truly special space that reflects my creativity. I started trying to buy and thrift décor that would complement what I already owned. A lot of bohemian décor we see on Pinterest, Instagram or Etsy is not readily available or affordable in South Africa. That is what gave me the idea to start Furbelow. Then, I discovered Jungalow® and my inspiration was complete! What is cool is that my home is what inspired Furbelow, and now styling and designing for Furbelow is what inspires my home.

What are your most prized treasures?
I am a bit of a magpie, so all my treasures are very precious to me. I collect things, hoard them in our nest, and get great joy out of experiencing them in different parts of my home. My latest haul, which I am very much in love with, is a large vintage fan that I found gathering dust in the back of a charity shop. We hung it over an archway in the dining room and it just completes the space. I have a big emotional attachment to the vintage dressing table and chair in our bedroom – my grandmother gave it to me. She did the tapestry herself and the colors make me very happy. I am also very lucky to have a sister, Jessica Webster, and a great friend, Maja Maljevic, who are brilliant fine artists. So, a lot of my walls are adorned with explosive, beautiful art that was given to me or loaned for extended periods of time.

What does a day in your life look like?
I am constantly hustling and am always working on different things. I have my film commercial work and also Furbelow. So, I move between the two all the time. As soon as I wake up early in the morning, I start working on my Instagram and Facebook posts for the day. Then, I am either quoting jobs or running off to meetings. Then, I come back and design a look based off that meeting. There is never any real structure to my day – I just have to get it all done, and sometimes it’s all at once. I try to do most of my work from home, though. It’s where my brain works best & everything makes sense. The best part of the day is when we take the dogs for a walk. We have a huge, magical park just down the road. The fresh air and awesome nature clear my head and put it all in perspective again.

Which type of bohemian from The New Bohemians Handbook best fits your style?
I think I am mostly a Maximal Bohemian. I am crazy about color and am always looking for & creating rainbow patterns. But, some of the rooms in our house are more modern/earthy, which is part of who we are, too.

How does your lifestyle complement your home décor?
I’m a Cancerian, so it’s no surprise that my home is my most important space & the center of my world. We spend most of our time here and have friends and family over a lot. We have the space to fit a lot of people, as well as different spaces to spend time in. The face that I’m constantly changing the décor around the house makes our home a fun and interesting space. There are always new things to look at and experience.

What do you do to ensure your home has good vibes?
Natural light, open windows, fresh air and (I learned this from you guys) lots of plants!

Do you have a favorite room or space in your home?
I have a few, and it has to do where the sun is shining. In the mornings, I love my lounge as the sun streams through the windows; it feels like a fresh, invigorating space. In the afternoon, my favorite is generally the sun room, which is on the other side of the house. The room glows with warm light and all the colors pop and shimmer. When the sun is setting, I love to sit on my patio and look at the huge plane trees that surround our garden.

When people walk into your home, how do you want them to feel?
Excited, like they have a lot to look at & a lot to explore.

What inspires you?
Hands down, Justina Blakeney and Jungalow. I always have had a bohemian style and a slightly eccentric way of decorating, but I just didn’t have the confidence to share my ideas on décor. Then, I discovered Jungalow on Pinterest and your pictures, blogs and stories solidified my vision and gave me the confidence to decorate wildly and to launch my shop, Furbelow. I will always be hugely grateful to you for that.

We’re over here beaming ear to ear after chatting with Bryony and hearing all of her incredible stories and the inspirations behind her designs. We love how she decorates with such meaningful pieces & that she totally is livin’ the décor dream! Her space is a seriously magical place, Jungalistas. If you wanna keep the good vibes flowing and see more of her space, find her on Instagram here. Find out more about Furbelow and snag some South African treasures here.
