Justina Blakeney X Pottery Barn Kids Room Makeovers

This post was created in Partnership with Pottery Barn Kids

My style is so wild, colorful and full of personality, that you can imagine how excited I was when I was approached by Pottery Barn Kids about doing a kids and nursery. Kids and nurseries are areas where color and pattern and wild style is ‘allowed’ and I was really VERY excited to add some flavor into kids and baby rooms!! (All white nurseries can be chic and all, but you know how I feel about color!!) After over a year of design and development with the super creative Pottery Barn Kids team, our three collections are finally here: Jungalino, Magic Disco Caravan and Astronomad.

Jungalino has both a nursery and a kids collection. The Jungalino collection was really about re-interepreting “Jungalow” with the littles in mind. For example, the artwork in the above Jungle Scene Mural from the Jungalino room is based on an imaginary world I created with Ida. The world is called Glump Glump forest, and it’s where all the fanciful creatures from all of her favorite stories and fairytales live (it would not be unusual, for example, for Pooh Bear to have a run in with Moana or Dorothy and Toto). All of the patterns from the sheets, pillows and bedding are from my original paintings and drawings.

Magic Disco Caravan was, in great part, inspired by my own colorful childhood in Berkeley which was full of travel, discovery and adventure. The collection is full of whimsical imagery — from mermaids and crystal balls to hamsas and the Magic Disco Caravan mascot, our Vida Luna doll, who was the doll I would have loved to have when I was a little girl but did not exist. My sister and I had a penchant to turn everything into a fort/wild/dance party and that’s the spirit of Magic Disco Caravan.

The Astronomad Collection was largely inspired by Ida’s sense of wonder and sheer curiosity about outer space. I have learned a lot about astronomy through her curiosity, and I love the way she asks so many really poignant questions about this world and the worlds beyond. We gave the collection a bit of a 70’s vibe as well. Can you tell I have a bit of nostalgia for my own childhood?

My brother’s family just moved into a new home and the timing worked out perfectly so we were able to decorate the kids’ rooms with some of our Pottery Barn Kids pieces and I’m so excited to share the results with you here.

For Momo’s room, he chose a lot of the Astronomad pieces– and the shape of his room lends itself so well to this collection because it feels like a rocket ship, doesn’t it? He was SO excited about his little room he couldn’t stop jumping up on the bed when he was showing me his favorite pieces. The peel and stick wallpaper made a really big difference to the room, adding a ton of dimension to the space — and it’s perfect for them since they are renters as it peels right off without damaging the walls.

(Go here to watch a video of us installing the peel and stick wallpaper).

In Stella’s room, we added bedding and the rug from our Magic Disco Caravan collection to create a vibrant, magical little wonderland for her. I love this bedding and rug so much because I feel it can really grow with your child — it is whimsical but not just for tiny kiddos.

I wanted to add strong messages in the Magic Disco collection, so the artwork and pillows are embroidered and printed with messages of encouragement for our kiddos. I’m SO proud of the quality of the pieces in our collections. Our sheets are almost all organic cotton. There are special details and little surprises throughout. It’s really pretty amazing. This stuff was designed to last.
