Job Description

We are seeking a local operator to run self-guided trips in Oregon. The role is suited to a small business owner or independent contractor residing in the Portland area with strong knowledge of the Willamette Valley, Mt. Hood, and the Columbia River Gorge regions. The Local Operator will be responsible for running LifeCycle Adventures’ bike trips in the Willamette Valley, Mt. Hood and Columbia River Gorge regions. This will include transportation, guiding and being on-call to support trip participants as needed.

Our trips are a unique blend of custom itineraries and personal service: the perfect cycling vacation for those who want to explore on their own terms rather than being part of a large group. From the moment a guest contacts us until the end of their trip they will find us responsive, attentive and totally focused on ensuring they have the perfect tour. Our expert guides live in the areas in which they operate and have the passion and dedication to deliver superior service and exceptional insight.

Day to day, however, the Local Operator will work relatively autonomously using their best judgment, experience, and knowledge of the area.
While the Local Operator should expect to work hands on – leading some trips themselves – it will be important that they recruit and train a number of other guides to help them support trips.

This is not a full-time role but rather an as-needed position based on sold trips for the season. There are likely to be between 30 to 40 trips per, year the majority of which run from June thru September. A trip may last anywhere from 3 to 8 days. As such, the local Operator must have the flexibility to be able to support a part-time and unpredictable workload.
A good local operator will have strong guides as well as having the business and organizational skills to manage trips, coordinate bookings and account for expenses.
A successful operator will have the following characteristics:
– Well organized with good attention to detail. – Prior experience in operating bike tours. – Open and communicative.
Successful guides will have the following characteristics:
– Excellent hosting skills with a high standard of professionalism & customer service. – Prior bike guiding or other related hospitality experience. – Knowledge of local history, culture, and geography. – Enthusiastic cyclist & capable bike mechanic. – Clean driving record, and clean background check. – Current First Aid/CPR Certificate.
Remuneration:
Payment will be based on an agreed rate schedule. Rates will vary according to the length and complexity of the trips supported. Exact rates will be mutually agreed during the recruiting process.
